Emerson Doyle was raised in North Wales, with her two sisters Anne and Rose, and her parents divorced when she was 5 which made her mother move Emerson and her sisters to Gwynedd. Her early interest was inspired by her father, after seeing him perform with his 60s rock band at a pub on videotape, she grew up with no other influences or owning any music. Emerson started singing at age 9 and carried around a notebook in which she scribbled lyrics. She was booted from her school's choir because her voice was "too strong" and she "didn't fit in".
She returned to North Wales when she was 13, and started to sing in various local bands. Following an unsuccessful music project, and was invited to appear on Pop Idol. She was expected to win, but came to second place to the winner. Emerson has claimed she was conned into the appearance and called it "the unhappiest time in my life." In her teens, Emerson wanted and expected to be a world famous pop star and let others use her "as a vehicle for vision not mine." At age 17, thinking her dreams were not going to come true, she became almoste a quite withdrawn singer. After a re-evalutation she decided to just make music for no other purposes than her own fulfillment.
Emerson became a student at the University of Chester in England. Advised by a lecturer to "Go on the dole, and become a singer," she left and worked for an optivian, while building in Alexander's performing with guitarist Jason Roy. She recorded a three-song-EP in England in 2005 while working as a waitress and in a fishery. Alexander Parfet from the band Retro Cords, introduced Emerson in September 2005 music manager, Chauncey Brendon. After Brendon had given Emerson a music "education" by downloading tracks on to her iPod that she could listen to while around London or travelling back to Wales - including Abrianna Britton, Arianne Merendino, Amanda Harlow and Zeke Stevens - the pair then co-wrote with her and helped create a new sound.
Contracted to Colombia/Red Ink on October 18, 2007, is called the "new Amanda" (reference to singer Amanda Harlow). Emerson started to perform her single "Hometown Glory" on Bristish television shows in December. In January, 2008, she released her debut album Daydreamer, and started to make her Unites States musical debut.
In March, she had her first big American performances at the SXSW conference and in New York City, which she decided to move to for the time being. The Coachella Festival was her first festival gig. The performance started off with sound problems but she delighted the crowd with 'Daydreamer', 'Tired', 'Crazy for You', and 'Chasing Pavements'. To coincide with the release of Daydreamer, Emerson performed at New York's historic Apollo Theater and made a number of television appearances.
As of August 2008, Emerson has been constantly writing material for a second album, compiling loads of books of song ideas. Emerson said that she will not constantly reinvent herself for each album.
